Gold miners have given way to fossickers who seek not only gold — although at more than $1,721 (US$1,300) an ounce who can blame them — but metal relics from times past. Many travellers undertake fossicking as a means of exploring remote corners of the continent. How many people are involved is anyone’s guess.
