The Warlock range of lures from JM Gillies continues to expand each season, with the latest offering aimed primarily at our freshwater native fish. Aptly named the Native Lolly, this lure comes in two sizes, with each of those available in two running depths.
The larger Warlock lure measures 90mm, with running depths of both 4m-plus and 2.5m-plus. Great on the cast, the shallower version of the two can be worked around the fringes of bankside structure or weed beds. The deeper model is more at home amongst the twisted snags and drop-offs that offer sanctuary to ambush predators during full light.
While both models work exceptionally well on the cast, they truly come into their own on the troll. We put these lures to work in a local Murray hole and several other Murray cod hotspots over the course of a few trips, and they were a real drawcard for timber-tight fish. As a trolling lure, the Native Lolly swims nose-down with a rhythmic running action that seems all but impervious to snagging. Time and again, these lures would roll through the thickest of timber-clad runs, rarely stopping for anything other than the lip-clad gob of a feisty Murray cod.
Both the deep and shallow models caught numerous fish and worked well in their respective depth ranges. Easy to use, these lures will be a favourite for those who love to feel the caning strike from a cod as the lure rolls over a snag. For those anglers that prefer the laidback style of rods in holders as they kick back and cruise the river’s course, these lures will suit the task just nicely.

The smaller 70mm model also comes in two different running depths, once again 4m-plus and 2.5m-plus. This lure opens up other target options besides Murray cod, including golden or silver perch and a host of other species like redfin, trout, bass and almost any predatory species that swims.
Great on the cast and equally at home on the troll, the 70mm Native Lolly is sure to be a winner as it finds its way into a few tackle boxes over the coming season. This smaller model is also right at home in the snags, with its head-down action once again providing a great deal of snag resistance.
From salt to fresh, the Warlock range continues to expand with an excellent range of lures purpose-built to suit the fish and the conditions they reside in. From black bass to barramundi, Murray cod and golden perch, there is a size and model to suit your every fishing need.
These lures are available at BCF.
